P.E.I. Senator Elizabeth Hubley is calling for the elimination of tuition in post-secondary education.

She marked the 10th anniversary of the Senate report on post-secondary education in a speech to the Upper House by making the recommendation on tuition.

Just over a decade ago, the Senate Committee on Post-Secondary Education, chaired by the late Sen.Lorne Bonnell of P.E.I. spelled out a vision for post-secondary education in Canada.

Hubley noted that many of the issues raised in the report continue to be pressing today, particularly the need to ensure that young people are given the tools to thrive in a modern economy.

“As a society we long ago decided to provide free education through high school because it was the bare minimum needed to function in a modern economy,” the senator told her colleagues. “But things have changed, and a high school diploma is no longer enough. If the bare minimum now is a post-secondary education, it should also be tuition free.”

Hubley emphasized her concern about two major problems highlighted in the report, which remain unresolved ten years later: funding and access.
“My concern is that our post-secondary education system does not have the secure funding necessary to meet the vision articulated by the Bonnell Committee, and in particular, I am concerned that financial and other considerations continue to be a barrier to access for too many Canadians,” said Hubley.
